Unsere Trainerin Janet stellt sich vor

Hi, my name is Janet, and I’m one of the “oldies” at the English Institute. I’ve been teaching English here since 1989, so I started back in the days of chalkboards and cassette tapes. But as far as actual age, let’s just say I’m young at heart.

Like Patrick (last month), I’m also from the United States and am also interested in music and travel. Since I couldn’t bring my contrabass with me to Germany, I turned to Gamelan music, which may mean something to you if you’ve been to Indonesia. I play in a group called Kyai Sabda, which practices once a week on the over-100-year-old instruments on display at the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum. I also occasionally take an English class through the museum and give them an overview of the concept behind the permanent exhibition, in English, of course! (That concept being: We, the various inhabitants of this planet, have more things in common than things that make us different.) I’ve noticed that Germans tend to enjoy talking about holidays and their own travels and are generally well-informed about other countries, so I like to give my students space to discuss these things in class.

My own fascination with foreign places goes back to my experience of attending kindergarten in Japan, which came about because my father was stationed there in the 1960s and thought a little cultural immersion would be good for me. I’m very grateful to him for making that decision, because I think it made me more curious about other people, places, languages and cultures. In today’s world where there is so much fear and distrust of “people who are different”, I think it’s important for people to stay (or get) curious about others, and the most important tool you can use to learn more about these people is a common language. So I also try to encourage curiosity among my students about each other. To me, a good learning environment is one in which all those involved enjoy being with each other and want to find out more about – and from — each other. I have certainly learned a lot from my own students and their life experience and different ways of thinking. So thanks to all of you who have enriched my life in this way over the years!

Sprachnachweise
